  • People looking for a trail shoe for short to long distance runs
  • Ultra runners who need a responsive running shoe
  • Runners preparing for a 50K race
  • People who plan to do long-distance training in the mountains (approximately 50 to 100 km)

Who shouldn't buy it:

If you have wide feet, the Hoka Speedgoat 5 may not be the right fit for you. In that case, consider the Topo MTN Racer 2 for roomier toe room.

Exceptional Grip:

The Speedgoat 5 's Vibram outsole provides excellent grip on icy, moderately muddy and loose off-road surfaces. Experts rave about its versatility and stickiness.

Hoka Speedgoat 5 vs 4: From better to best

Speedgoat 4 has been hailed as the best version of all the Speedgoats. The Hoka Speedgoat 5 takes it to the next level, impressing trail runners with:

  • Improved traction with redesigned bumps
  • A more forgiving fit
  • Reduced weight midsole (US10 size reduced from 320g to 290g)

excellent grip

The Hoka Speedgoat 5 's Vibram outsole provides excellent grip on icy, moderately muddy and loose off-road surfaces. Experts hail it as "extraordinarily versatile" and "extremely sticky" and love it

This is thanks to the shoe's updated tread spacing, they are not too far apart, giving the shoe great grip.

We also measured the tread depth on the Hoka Speedgoat 5 at a solid 3mm.

Very breathable for a trail shoe

On top of the protective upper, the Hoka Speedgoat 5 still keeps the foot well ventilated. See how the smoke moves through the shoe with ease in various parts of the upper.

The video shows which areas are more transparent and breathable.

improve your stride

If you're a fan of the Hoka Speedgoat, the Hoka Speedgoat 5 runs and rides just like the Hoka Evo Speedgoat, but testers say it's more "resilient" and "better energy return."

The Hoka Speedgoat 5 is also one of the softest trail running shoes on the market, up to 60% better than average.

The Speedgoat is unique in that, even in cold temperatures, it remains softer than most running shoes at room temperature.

After 20 minutes in a cold box, the shoe's foam became 63.6 percent stiffer, but in its " cold " state it was still 34 percent softer than most shoes at room temperature.

Elastic toe jumping

Equipped with the late Meta-Rocker, the shoe's toe-off is very easy and smooth. So, if you want to set your personal best, these shoes are a good choice.

The Hoka Speedgoat 5 has just the right amount of flex in the forefoot to help make the transition from heel to forefoot more fluid. It's more flexible than your average running shoe, and 18 percent more flexible than average.

Feels stable on any terrain

The shoe is very supportive and stable, especially in the heel and midfoot. Reviewers say they don't feel out of balance when taking quick turns and on banked surfaces.

Because this shoe has a wide platform. On the forefoot (116.4mm), it's 4.6mm wider than average. And on the heel (97.5mm), it's a staggering 8.7mm wider.

Strength Level: Speedgoat

The Hoka Speedgoat 5 is very strong. They feature a virtually indestructible Vibram outsole. The midsole is equally good. After running more than 30 miles on rough terrain, runners reported that it didn't show any signs of compression. It's like a tank. They expect it to last 350 to 400 miles.

feels light, is actually light

At 276 grams or 9.7 ounces (US M9), the Hoka Speedgoat 5 is very light. By comparison, the average trail running shoe on the market weighs 300 grams (10.6 ounces). Most agree that it doesn't feel heavy on your hands or feet.

The fit of the Hoka Speedgoat 5 is excellent

Contrary to the Speedgoat 4 and Evo Speedgoat, the Hoka Speedgoat 5 has a more flexible and forgiving upper. This makes it a good choice for long runs, especially when feet start to swell.

However, those with very wide feet warn that the upper may "press" on the little toe.

The upper is slightly narrower in the forefoot area by 1.9mm compared to the average running shoe. However, it's still pretty roomy by our measurements (96.3mm).

The tongue is also spaced, which makes for better locking. It also has a butterfly design that wraps tightly around the top of the foot.

We're surprised runners haven't complained about lace bite, as the Hoka Speedgoat 5 has a rather thin tongue. At 2.3mm thick, it's much thinner than the average thickness of 5.8mm.

Non-slip heel

The heel of the Hoka Speedgoat 5 provides a snug fit. Sufficient padding and excellent heel design to ensure that the rear heel will not slip off.

And this kind of wearing feeling will not be too hard. In our subjective assessment, we give it a 2 out of 5 being the hardest."

Foot protection on tough off-road trails

The shoe features a toe guard to protect the foot when hitting rocks and roots.

The shoe's thick cushioning provides excellent protection and minimizes ground feel.

Heel stack height is 27.5mm and forefoot height is 23.7mm. Although slightly thinner than average by a few millimeters, the shoe offers well-balanced impact protection thanks to good cushioning in both areas.

Insoles are included in our stack measurements. The Hoka Speedgoat 5 is 2.8mm thick.

Reflective elements are a handy touch

Runners who run in low light conditions will appreciate the reflective features of this shoe.

Other features of the Hoka Speedgoat 5

The upper is made using recycled materials.

The upper is also vegan, meaning the Hoka Speedgoat 5 does not use any animal products or products that have been tested on animals.
